Shared infectious diseases, some of which are maintained in wildlife populations can spill over into livestock and jeopardize the viability of livestock operations. The Medical and Life Sciences Research Fund has sponsored the project: What role do African buffalo play in virus circulation? - which hopes to characterise seroprevalence of Rift Valley Fever in African buffalo, characterise seroprevalence of Rift Valley Fever outside Kruger in cattle and finally estimate spill-over potential by determining which species mosquitoes are feeding on at both sides of the interface.
